Bee Orchid Ophrys apifera var. bergarum

This variant Bee Orchid Ophrys apifera var. bergarum has been found in several parts of the UK, including Anglesey, Hampshire and Somerset. It was first described in an article by the well-known orchid expert Derek Turner-Ettlinger that was published in the BSBI journal Watsonia.

This photograph was taken at the original Hampshire site where I found a handful of variant plants. Some 200 Ophrys apifera var. bergarum plants flowered in 1993 when the site was visited by Derek Turner-Ettlinger.
